We visited Huynh Hoa banh mi as soon as we landed in Ho Chi Minh and we ended up going back twice during our third visit to Vietnam. Before I left Japan, I read about this place on Mark Wiens website and it was featured in my wife Japanese guide books.
If you have never eaten banh mi, it’s pretty much a Vietnamese sandwich, but what a sandwich. As you can see, Huyn Hoa is a popular place and on the three times we visited, we had to wait in line and slowly make our way toward sandwich nirvana.
Big lines are a good sign.
Why is it so good? First, the warm crispy baguette.
Then the ladies build your sandwich on the spot.
Smile at the ladies, they will eventually give you your banh mi.
I dream about this stuff. Pork flakes, all kind of cold cuts, mayonaise, liver pâté.
This is what you get. Now, you just need a place to eat. We took our sandwich to the big park in the center of HMC and just sat on a bench.
Heaven. It’s the perfect balance of veggies, meat and bread. It’s a litle bit spicy, so bring some water along.
You want this. Yes, this is a reason to visit Vietnam.
It’s also pretty cheap and you will feel like a local.
Join the line and get your banh mi.
