Drinking a Clover made Reserve coffee at the Honmachi Starbucks

by Luc Gougeon

Dear Howard Schultz (for my friends who don’t know, he is the CEO of Starbucks),

I just finished reading  Onward and I found it both informative and inspiring.   After reading the part about the Clover coffee machine, I decided to find one in Japan and by some amazing chance, I located one in Osaka where I went on a day trip over the weekend.   (it’s the only machine in Osaka!)

UCC Coffee Museum and UCC Coffee Road

by Luc Gougeon

UCC or Ueshima Coffee Company is a household name for any coffee drinkers in Japan. The brand is omnipresent and I was super happy to visit their coffee museum which is located in Kobe.   It’s also where I drank one of the rarest coffee in the world, just keep reading.

Tokyo Tea Room in Okayama

When I first saw a picture of the Tokyo Tea Room in a book about old Okayama coffee shops, I knew I would eventually find my way there. This very unique shop is located on Akura Dori not too far from the amazing Fa Niente restaurant and I am pretty sure I walked in front of it many times and  never stopped because of the  UCC coffee sign. Ueshima Coffee company produces some good coffee, but it’s never my first choice.   Something else took me here, just keep up reading…

Tachibana Coffee in Kanazawa

Kanazawa City in Ishikawa Prefecture is my kind of city, not too big, not too small and packed with old streets.   Kanazawa wasn’t bombed during the second world war, so it has that old Japanese city feel.

Koba Coffee Kurashiki

Koba Coffee is a brand new coffee roaster located in the heart of the old Bikan area in Kurashiki.  It’s a bit on the edge of the old historic area on one of the smaller streets near Ivy Square, but it’s worth the trip. Kurashiki is such a nice place, so it’s always fun to play tourist in my own town.

Union Bread Kurashiki

Union bread is not open anymore… they closed down in March 2017.
Union Bread has been for a couple of years my go to place in Kurashiki for great bread, but I somehow never posted anything about it. It’s not too late to recommend this great little bakery built inside two shipping containers.

Streamer Espresso Osaka

I arrived in Osaka at 9AM and I was surprised to find the city so calm.  The sun was already scorching hot and the streets were empty when I made it to the Maxx Department Store. It’s weird to see the calmer side of Osaka and Streamer is the perfect place to start the day.  I think that Osaka kicks into second gear at around 11 AM, so it’s a blessing to find this place open.
