When I last visited Fukuoka, the city was taken over by 35 000 members from Lions Club International. The Lions Club could not have picked a better place to hold their meeting. I was in the city for a very short business trip and I decided to try a new ramen shop.
Fukuoka remains one of my favorite city in Japan and like everywhere, the coffee scene is blooming. During this very short stay, I decided to visit Tokado coffee. Too many coffee shops, not enough time.
If you are not familiar with the Fukuoka food scene, a yatai is a traditional food cart which can be found at night time all over Fukuoka. While some of them are very centrally located, on my latest visit to Fukuoka, I decided to give Hanayama a try after reading about it in Fukuoka Now.
Hirao tempura restaurant was suggested to me while I was having a not so gastronomical dinner of Costco pizza drenched with Malbec Costco wine. Despite having the least Japanese meal you can imagine, since my host was born and raised in Fukuoka, I trusted him with the next day lunch. Always trust the local!!!
Since I arrived in Japan and started discovering coffee shops, I have been recommended many places by coffee shop owners and Cafe Bimi was of course one of them. The owner of Orizuru in Okayama told me about Cafe Bimi a while ago since he is a good friend of the master and they travelled together to Africa to visit coffee farms in Ethiopia and Yemen. Let’s just say that Cafe Bimi which is located in Fukuoka city is just as charming and delicious as I was told it would be.

Motsunabe is a Fukuoka speciality, if you have never heard of it, it’s a simple hot pot dish of offals cooked in a soy sauce based soup with plenty of garlic and garlic chive. Motsunabe restaurants are legion in Fukuoka, but this time, we went to a smaller and less touristy place.
Udon is not the first thing that comes to mind when I think about Fukuoka, but I was surprised to find out that there is a local version of this popular dish.
It was snowy in Fukuoka and my ever lasting quest for coffee had suddenly came to a dead end when I came upon the closed doors of Honey Coffee roaster. One of the worker at Honey coffee was nice enough to recommend that we walk toward Yakuin station and try a place called Rec Coffee which are using their coffee beans.
I really like sushi, but it seem that I don’t eat it that often since I arrived in Japan. I was really happy to threat myself with a nice sushi lunch at Hyotan during my latest visit to Fukuoka.
During the new year holiday, I visited the town of Dazaifu which is about 30 min by train outside of Fukuoka City. On my way to the famous Tenman-gu Shrine for the new year prayer, I stumbled upon a brand new Starbucks coffee shop.
