Chang Thai is a small restaurant located a stone throw away from the North side of Kurashiki station and the consumerism mess of the Ario shopping center.
The restaurant is hidden behind a driving school and an hardware store, but it’s worth the walk.
The place is owned by a Thai chef and his Japanese wife and I was very pleased by the kind service in English and the English menu that made ordering really easy.
The restaurant itself is very nice and cosy.
The lunch menu is only 850 yen and I opted for the tom yum soup and my wife got the Thai noodles stir fry.
The meal came with a small cabbage salad which had a sweet dressing.
I ordered my tom yum medium spicy and to my surprise, it was actually spicy. The soup was complex with distinct flavors of lemongrass, kaffir lime and coriander.
The rice was actually thai rice and it came with a small omelet. As much as I love Japanese rice, it’s nice to eat something different once in a while.
My wife pad thai was pretty darn delicious: a bit sweet, a bit sour and a bit spicy. I ended up finishing her plate since the portions at Chang Thai a pretty generous.
The dessert was coconut ice cream.
There is no doubt in my mind that I will become a regular at Chang Thai since the whole menu looked delicious and it’s so affordable.
