Shirasu or whitebait is something better eaten fresh and there is no better place than the the Sadamisaki peninsula in Ehime Prefecture to try this tiny little transparent baby fish. Sadamisaki is a long narrow peninsula extending toward Kyushu Island and quite a nice drive on route 197.
Shirasu Shokudo is located on the second floor of Shirasu Park which is pretty much a fishing processing plan and a museum devoted to shirasu. This nice little restaurant is located in the little fishing hamlet of Kawanohama.
The first floor is a shop where it’s possible to buy shirasu and crabs.
The restaurant is located on the second floor and judging by the stack of orders next to the cash register, this place is really popular. We got there at 1h30 and there was a line.
I ordered the boiled shirasu set
The boiled shirasu are so good! I wished I had ordered a bigger portion.
The shirasu and crab tempura are cooked to order. Great stuff!
We also ordered fresh shirasu.
If you have never tried shirasu and you can find a way to drive to Shirasu Park, I can promise you will enjoy this. There are no easy access to this place, you either drive there or arrive by the sea.
