When the Okayama AEON opened in early December 2014, I was a bit surprised to find La Mère Poulard restaurant on the seventh floor of this gigantic urban mall. La Mère Poulard is originally from Mont St-Michel in France and they also have a restaurant in Tokyo. I kept wondering about the choice of Okayama for second restaurant in Japan, but hell, it’s all the better for us.

Niimi City is a place full of surprises, yes, you read this right: Niimi City! If you don’t know Niimi, it is located about 1h30 North of Kurashiki and it has been one of my favorite stop for great food since I arrived in Japan. Ramen Tomare and Chiya Beef yakiniku are both worth the trip alone, but Yanagi Soba is off the chart . First, you will have to find this place!

Hanoi is solidly ensconced in its colonial heritage, the streets are lined with great architecture, food and an a certain “je ne sais quoi“. It’s Vietnam, but staying at the hotel Metropole where you are greeted by a loud bonjour, you might believe you just landed in some weird French entity.

French food in Japan, French restaurant in the middle of nowhere on the ever busy route 2, why not?
I’ve driven in front of Chez Petit Lis a couple of time without even considering stopping there, it’s located between Fukuyama and Kurashiki on route 2. I’ll be honest, I had a difficult time imagining that a French restaurant could do business among the ramen and udon shop, but I guess I was proven wrong.
